Margaret Gatty was a 19th century phycologist, a collector and researcher of seaweed, a pioneering scientist at a time when female scientists were very thin on the ground indeed and the sight of a respectable woman, the wife of a vicar no less, foraging on the shore in her petticoats would have been, to put it mildly, surprising. Her extraordinary collection of seaweeds is housed at St Andrews University in Scotland and is a testament to the richness and diversity of one the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth.
